Top Accounting Websites
Bark Street Digital recently carried out an analysis of the websites of the top 10 UK accountancy firms. Alarmingly, we discovered, using the Google Developers Page Speed Index that 9 out of the 10 websites analysed did not have sufficient speed and were not performing well against the metrics in this test.
In addition to the speed test, we analysed the websites against a number of factors, including contact methods and features on the website. Some of our finings are shown below.
Page speed
As mentioned above, 90% of websites analysed failed Google’s page speed test. Page speed is important, not only for providing a great user experience, but it is also now a factor used by Google when ranking pages.
Client features
40% of the websites analysed scored well for client features, with most having a client portal for existing clients.
Contact methods
0% of the top 10 accounting websites featured any form of live chat for potential clients to ultilise for the purpose of asking questions etc. Some of the benefits of live chat for both large and small businesses is the fact that it allows you to connect with prospective customers and improves overall user experience and conversion rates.
Only 1 of the 10 websites analysed had a method for contacting the company obviously displayed on their homepage. For all websites, contact forms on the homepage were non-existent with the majority having a contact form on a separate “contact us” page.
Having a contact form on every page makes it much easier for clients and potential clients to get in touch and request information on your accounting services.
Content marketing
Whilst all websites analysed had a regularly updated blog/ news section, only 30% of those websites contained a mailing list signup form allowing visitors to receive regular updates. This means that 70% of these top accounting firms are missing out on a huge opportunity to reach potential clients through their inbox.
What does this mean for smaller accounting firms?
The fact that the top accounting firm websites are not performing well does not mean that smaller accounting firms should follow their lead and cease development to their own websites. On the contrary; this presents an opportunity to smaller business owners to outperform the websites of larger corporations and take a greater share of the market from them by providing a better experience for customers and ranking higher for specific terms on search engines.
